I was talking with Mom yesterday about Michael and I realized
that I hadn't told everybody about his allergies. Since there is a
good chance (heh, heh, heh) that some of you will watch him for us
sometime, I thought that I would go ahead and let you know about them
while I am thinking about it. Michael is allergic to quite a few
things, but the most important ones to note are:
Peanuts (and therefore ALL types of nuts): Michael's face swole up so
much that his eyes could barely open and he started having trouble
breathing within minutes of trying his first peanut butter sandwich.
Luckily some benadryl helped and we have tried hard not to expose him
to nuts since then (even touching them can give him a rash.)
Milk: Michael is allergic to milk and all of its products (milk,
cheese, yogurt, etc.) and gets a really bad rash (that can even start
bleeding) if he has them, even in baked or cooked foods like cake,
cookies, crackers, etc.
Eggs: Michael has the same reaction to eggs that he has to milk (i.e.
severe rash which is VERY uncomfortable for the poor little guy.)
This means that he can not have foods that have any egg derivatives in
them. This includes most processed foods (especially fried foods) and
most noodles or pasta.
So, as you can imagine, feeding Michael takes a lot of planning
and work. He really enjoys fruits, soy milk, rice, meat, juice and
home made baked products (they have to be home made because
store-bought bread products almost always have either egg or milk or
both in them, even if they don't say so!) Unfortunately, he remembers
really, really liking other foods like cookies, fried foods, store
bread, milk, etc. and so gets very sad when he sees other kids (like
William) being allowed to eat them when he gets a plate of rice. So,
when you watch the poor little guy, if you could please keep all of
this in mind we would really appreciate it!
